Larch facts
  • Beautiful to look at
  • Excellent durability
  • Slow grown-high density
  • Environmentally friendly
Siberian Larch is harvested from mid-eastern Siberia. Approximately 2/3 of the Siberian forest area of 230 million hectares is grown over with Larch. Annual growth is greater than the annual felling programme.

The forestry resources of Russia are in excess of 1.18 billion hectares, annual growth is estimated at 800 million m3, allowable cut is 500 million m3, annual cut at present is around 100 million m3.

Properties

Colour varies from light yellow - orange - gold - brown heatwood. Siberian Larch is one of the most durable species of coniferous wood. Owing to its slow growth rate it has an unusual durability for a softwood with a density of 700 - 800 kg.m3 - dry wood. Owing to its high density, Larch has an excellent wear/impact resistance ideal for cladding areas where impact damage may occur i.e. Schools, Shopping areas, Public Walkways etc.

Durability

Class 111 (based upon average of European and Russian Larch). Experience has shown that Siberian Larch is much more durable.

10 - 15 years in contact with the ground
50 - 100 years unprotected outdoors
100 - 150 years Protected outdoors
