Fire Rated Timber Cladding: What It Is and When You Need It

What is Fire Rated Timber Cladding?

Fire rated timber cladding is timber cladding that has been treated, tested, and classified to improve its reaction to fire. It is not the same as untreated timber, and it should not be specified based on appearance alone. The rating must relate to the product, treatment, and intended use. 

In the UK, fire performance for construction products is commonly assessed through the Euroclass system under EN 13501-1. This system classifies materials from A1 to F, with A1 being non-combustible and F covering products that are unclassified or have not met minimum requirements. 

Timber is a combustible material, but with the correct, certified fire-retardant treatment it can achieve improved classifications. Fire Performance in Timber Cladding

When is Fire Resistance Required in the UK?

Fire resistance may be required where a building’s height, use, location, boundary distance, or fire strategy places stricter requirements on the external wall build-up. Approved Document B provides guidance on fire safety in and around buildings in England, including external wall considerations. Designers must still assess the full wall system, not just the cladding board in isolation.  

Fire rated cladding is often considered for multi-storey buildings, commercial schemes, schools, healthcare settings, leisure buildings, and public-use facilities. It may also be required where a building sits close to a relevant boundary, or where the project’s fire engineer has identified a higher-risk façade condition. 

There are also situations where timber cladding may not be suitable, even when treated. For certain higher-risk residential buildings, UK regulations restrict the use of combustible materials in external walls. This is why early specification advice is essential, especially on residential buildings with storeys at or above key height thresholds.  

For architects and developers, the safest route is to confirm requirements with the project fire engineer, building control body, and product supplier before finalising the façade package. This helps avoid delays, redesign, or the need to replace materials later in the programme.

Fire Rated vs Fire Resistant: What’s the Difference? 

The terms fire rated and fire resistant cladding are often used together, but they do not always mean the same thing. Fire rated usually refers to a tested and classified product, while fire resistant is a broader description of how a material performs when exposed to fire. 

For specification purposes, the classification matters. A product should be supported by test data, certification, and clear information about its intended application. It is not enough to describe cladding as fire resistant without knowing the standard it has been tested to, the classification achieved, and the conditions attached to that rating. 

This distinction is especially important with timber. Surface coatings, site-applied treatments, and uncertified products may not provide the same level of reassurance as a factory-treated, independently tested system. Where compliance is required, documentation should be available before installation begins. An area that rightly so is looked at very closely, with compliance and certification being the most important element when working with Fire Treated timber cladding.
