Shingles & Shakes
Oak shakes are often chosen for prestigious buildings or for the conservation of historic buildings – they make an ideal choice for church spires or bell towers. Cedar Shingles are used for roofing and side walls on structures including stables, summer houses and gazebos. They are an eco-friendly, durable, and lightweight solution.

Western Red Cedar Shingles
Western Red Cedar Shingles are primarily used for domestic and commercial roofing. They also create a brilliant aesthetic and durable solution for cladding on side walls or roofing on stables, summer houses, gazebos etc. They offer an environmentally friendly, durable and lightweight finish.
Many Victorian Church Spires in the UK are clad with Western Red Cedar Shingles. Their weather resistance in exposed situations makes them perfect to withstand the elements.
Shingles can also be fixed at a roof pitch as low as 14 degrees, offering a reliable form of roof covering other than felt or lead. Pre-formed Hip + Ridge cappings are also available to compliment your roof designs.
Shingles used for vertical cladding and roofing offer superb long-term, maintenance-free performance. When properly installed and maintained Western red cedar shingles can last for 30 to 50+ years.
Western Red Cedar is classified as ‘durable’ and offers excellent natural insulation with a value of K= 0.1067 W/M degrees C.
Being supplied from managed, responsible sources, shingles tend to be the by-product of logs sawn into usable lengths. They are generally produced from material remaining after the logs have been processed at the mill.
Oak and Chestnut Shakes
Oak shakes are often chosen for prestigious buildings or for the conservation of historic buildings due to their attractive and distinctive warm cream colour and a softly grained texture. They make an ideal choice for church spires or bell towers.
Vincent Timber’s Oak shakes are made from the heartwood of English Oak trees, with the sapwood removed. The remaining heartwood yields a very stable and durable product which is not prone to cup shrinkage.
Oak shakes are a hardwood alternative to Western Red Cedar shingles/shakes. They require no treatment as Oak has naturally high durability. Oak shakes can have up to three times the life span of sawn cedar.
Each shake is split from an oak round using a froe. If necessary, they are then dressed to ensure they lie reasonably flat and taper slightly along the length. The exposed surface is left undressed to leave the grain intact.
