Canadian Douglas Fir
Imported Canadian Douglas Fir, with exceptional strength, a warm colour, and can display a straight and fine grain creating an elegant and distinguished timber cladding.
Key properties
Canadian Douglas Fir, sourced from central Canada is perfect for timber cladding in areas of high footfall where other, softer species may be prone to damage.
The sapwood is light in colour and typically of narrow width, with the heartwood ranging from yellow to reddish-brown tones. Earlywood and latewood have a pronounced difference in colour, with latewood having darker, more sharply defined bands. This colour difference results in a distinctive grain pattern when flat-sawn, giving some character when installed as timber cladding. The wood has a fine to medium texture, straight grain, and is non-porous.
A moderately durable timber, suited to external timber cladding applications. Typically, Douglas Fir is left uncoated allowing natural weathering, changing the appearance to a silver/ grey over time.
Grades
Character Grade – Kiln Dried (K/D) knots allowed in this grade which add character and compliment the bold grain within the species.
Premium Grade – Kiln Dried (K/D) has a lower knot content, with smaller and less frequent knots. This grade is often referred to as 85/15. This is a premium grading measure, allowing 85% of the board to be clear #2, and the remaining 15% of the board to be clear.

Fixings
Stainless Steel fixings are recommended, reducing the opportunity for any extractives or tannins from the timber to react with the fixing. Either screws, or nails are suitable, this will be led by the requirements for your specific project.
We provide full fixing and installation information including batten specification, as an overview the following guidance should be met:
Nail or screw dimensions should be relative to the thickness of the board you are installing and be able to adequately secure the cladding. Annular ring shank fixings are recommended for softwood cladding:
