Key properties

Canadian Western Red Cedar is legally, responsibly and sustainably harvested in the publicly managed forests of British Columbia, Canada. Less than 1% of standing timber is harvested each year. For each tree harvested, three are replanted. A sustainable, and high performing species to select when looking for long lasting timber cladding on your project.

The species is known for the natural variance in colour it offers. Heartwood from the centre of the log may be a dark chocolate-brown colour, changing to a lighter, salmon pink nearer the sapwood portion of the log. When left uncoated the timber will naturally weather back to silver/ grey.

Available in large section sizes, with great stability, Canadian Western Red Cedar is one of the most popular choices for timber cladding applications. It’s ideal for garden offices and new residential builds, through to large scale commercial or education projects.

Fixings

Fixings

Stainless Steel fixings are recommended, reducing the opportunity for any extractives or tannins from the timber to react with the fixing. Either screws, or nails are suitable, this will be led by the requirements for your specific project.

We have provided full fixing and installation information including batten specification, as an overview the following guidance should be met:

Nail or screw dimensions should be relative to the thickness of the board you are installing and be able to adequately secure the cladding. Annular ring shank fixings are recommended for softwood cladding:
