European Oak Timber Cladding

Having a golden brown appearance with a distinctive grain, European Oak is the hardwood of choice for external timber cladding. Our Oak is a long lasting hardwood which will naturally weather to silver grey over time.

Timber Cladding

Key properties

European Oak timber cladding is supplied as a finger jointed product to offer an almost knot and defect free product. Finger jointed material also benefits from a reduction in tension, which can be present in all timber boards, especially noticeable in longer natural lengths. This makes the end 6.0m length very stable and not prone to excessive moisture movement.

European Oak is generally straight grained, hard wearing and durable, offering a very attractive hardwood timber cladding option. When freshly machined and installed European Oak will be have a light golden appearance. If left uncoated, the product will naturally weather back to a natural silver.

When working with European Oak, it is worth being aware of tannin staining. Oak can have tannin bleed, meaning water soluble extractives can move to the surface of the timber leading to discolouration, either localised to sections of individual boards, or in areas of high extractive content such as around knots. This is where suitable detailing to direct water and extractives away from the façade and adjoining materials is key.
