Timber Battens
Timber Battens, providing the support, and ventilated cavity separating the primary structure, and your Timber Cladding.
Key properties
Timber Cladding is typically installed on Timber Battens, either single batten, or batten and counter batten arrangement in the case of a vertical Timber Cladding installation.
Primarily there are two different options for support battens, Thermally Modified battens, or Preservative treated battens. Whichever option is selected for your project, the material should be selected to ensure the batten is capable of offering the same longevity in performance as the cladding of which it is supporting.
Thermally Modified Timber battens, typically a Redwood – these have undergone thermal modification, during this heat treatment process, chemical and structural changes occur within the timber which alter and improve its characteristics. After going through the environmentally-friendly treatment process, Thermowood is created. It will have darkened in colour from its pre-treated state.
The timbers dimensional stability is now enhanced due to the reduced moisture content within each board, this in turn results in less warping, swelling, and shrinking – all characteristics that make Thermowood ideal for use as a Timber Batten.

Fixings
Stainless Steel fixings are recommended, reducing the opportunity for any extractives or tannins from the timber to react with the fixing. Either screws, or nails are suitable, this will be led by the requirements for your specific project.
We have provided full fixing and installation information here including batten specification, as an overview the following guidance should be met;
Nail or screw dimensions should be relative to the thickness of the board you are installing and be able to adequately secure the cladding. Annular ring shank fixings are recommended for softwood cladding;
